The blustery winter winds are just around the corner. The end of autumn is approaching and the cold bitter months of winter will soon replace the fall. Your home relies on you, to give it the strength it needs to get through these frosty times unscathed. Just like human beings, homes will go through a period of adaptation.
Winter Adaptation: Preparing Your Home
The colder temperatures mean that the home’s materials will begin to slowly but surely contract. This is why you hear the creaking of floorboards as it becomes colder. However, your garden will suffer the most if you don’t help it survive, as the chili weeks will begin to kill and drench everything in sight. Water and ice present their own challenges as well, as they are kind of like the battering ram of winter that tries to break into your house.

Letting Your Lawn Breathe

Winterproof Your WindowsDrafts during the winter are common and they’re hated for that reason alone. Not only does your home lose so much heat, but it slowly widens the gap between the sealant and your windowsill. That’s why you need to refine the seals themselves. If you can see little bits that have curved upward, trim those pieces off. When you’ve done that, apply new silicone seals. If the damage to your seal is too far gone, then you need to strip it off and also replace the existing caulk. Clean the whole area with a fine grade of sandpaper. Apply a new layer of sealant afterward. This will tighten your windowsill, prevent any winter winds from bursting through the gaps and also, save you a ton on your heating bills.
