Be Your Own Muse: Tips for Bringing Your Personal Style to Life
Know Your Taste
Maybe you've recently gone through a life-changing experience, like a divorce or a move to a new town or city. and you feel it's time to leave the old you in the past and work on the new and improved you. Knowing your taste in beauty and fashion are important starting points when it comes to bringing your personal style alive...but what if you don't? Well, that's A-OK. Here are a few ways you can go about finding a style that speaks to you:
Fashion Magazines. Pick up a few fashion mags at the checkout next time you hit the store. Sit down and really peruse the pages, and see what catches your eye. Tear out the pages, and keep them in a binder or folder (or even a fashion vision board) as reference. You don't have to find a model's whole look appealing; you may find a sweater here, a bag there and maybe even shoes on a woman in an advertisement! It's all good--after all, it's what's speaking to you.
Pinterest. If you've never used Pinterest before, I highly recommend it. You can create virtual boards full of different topics and begin "pinning" things that show up in your feed (which you'll tailor to your interests) to your boards. Using the search function on Pinterest is much like using Google: just type in what you're looking for, and it will display applicable results. For example, "over 50 style" or "mature weekend looks" will have you checking out dozen of looks in no time.
Give it a Goog. Much like I've just described, using a specific internet search will help bring up tons of websites, shops and blogs (like this one!) that can help you on your style journey. Create a folder on your computer or on your bookmarks bar and start to save ideas, looks and advice you come across that you feel is relevant to you.
Take a style quiz. A style quiz is a fun way to find out what kind of look best suits you. Check out the style quiz we put together, below. Just answer a few easy-peasy questions (anonymously, of course) and we'll tell you what style we think would work for you!
Organize What You Already Have
If you're stuck in a fashion rut and feel like you've run out of steam when it comes to curating a stylish look, maybe all you need to do is shop your closet. In other words, we're going to work with what you already have.
The first step? Everything comes out of the closet, because it's time to organize. Separate your clothes into three piles: keep, toss and donate. How do you know what you want to toss and donate? Easy. If it's in great shape but you haven't worn it in at least a year, it's time to donate it. Maybe it doesn't fit. Maybe it's 20 years old and no longer trendy. Whatever the case, it's not doing any good just taking up space in your closet.
If an item is broken, damaged, ripped, torn or stained, then it's a candidate for the toss pile. By the way--we're big fans of eco-friendly living around here, so before you send it to the trash heap, see if it's possible to re-purpose the item first (it's also a fun way to get crafty, too!).
Once you've whittled down your closet to items you are most definitely keeping, stand back and check out what's left. What do you see? What color sticks out most? What item of clothing do you own the most of, sweaters, tees, tunics? What fabric seems to be your biggest favorite? Are you a fan of solids, florals or stripes? Are dresses or slacks more your thing? Once you see what direction your closet is headed, you can get a better idea of what your personal style really is.

Know What Doesn't Work For You
Once you've pared down your closet by what you like, it's time to try everything on. This isn't just to see if the item(s) still fit, but also to see what fits you best. For example, just because you looked great in low-rise jeans in the early 00s, doesn't mean you're going to look great in this style now. And that's not a slight at you, dear reader: the fact is, our bodies change as we age. We lose muscle mass, our bones get denser and we may even lose a little height. With that in mind, you may want to say no to the stilettos and yes to a more sensible (albeit stylish!) shoe.
Invest In Less
When it comes to buying clothes, less is more. It’s always a good idea to invest in a few higher-quality pieces that will last throughout the seasons instead of trendy pieces you will tire of in months. You don't have to spend a fortune, either: Sites like Poshmark, Grailed and Mercari can help you find timeless classics at discounted prices. Other sites like Stitchfix use a style quiz to see what would fit you best and send you through a myriad of looks to help determine your overall style, before assigning you a personal stylist and shipping out a box of high-quality ($55+) curated goodies tailored just for you. With Amazon Prime Wardrobe, there aren't any surprises: you can pick out your own classic pieces, test drive them at home, then decide what you'd like to keep and what you'd like to return--with zero obligation.
