Moving house can be an emotional and demanding experience, and no matter how many times we've done it, it's still just as overwhelming as the time before. But with the help of family, friends and professionals, you can plan for a stress-free moving day! Here's how.
Suggestions For A Stress-Free Moving Day
Plan In Advance"A goal without a plan is just a wish". ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
Ask anyone who's ever moved house and they will all tell you, you need a plan. There's so many things to think about before, during and even after your move that it just makes good sense to put together a checklist of items you'll need to consider to help keep you organized. moving.com has a great printable checklist, or you can even purchase a planner with separate sections for your budget, inventory, notes and more. If you prefer to use a spreadsheet to plan your move, here's a great basic one you can use: |
Destash & DeclutterOne of the most important aspects of moving house is decluttering and destashing your stuff. Not everything you own needs to make it to your new place; in fact, we actually recommend you don't take it all with you. For example, mismatched plates, utensils and cutlery have no place in a new home--trash them, and treat yourself to something new. Do the same with old, worn bath towels, washcloths and dish towels, too. If you're hoarding clothes, shoes and bags that have seen better days (or don't fit anymore), let them go. Also, old paperwork such as bills, receipts and even tax returns: scan to the cloud and shred the originals. This one's for the dudes: tools. If you have a stash of work tools you are hanging on to just 'cuz, this is the perfect opportunity to pare down to just what you know you need and have a use for.

Enlist The Help Of Family & Friends |
And / Or Hire Movers |
Asking friends and family for help with moving is about as awkward as it is to hear it. Our suggestion? Only ask those you know will do it. Or those who owe you one, like that solid you did for cousin Joey Bag O' Donuts. Now's the time to cash in and ask him to return the favor. Just remember that no matter who signs on to help you move, give them plenty of advance notice, show your gratitude and maybe even buy them a pizza. Who isn't motivated by pizza?

When it comes to moving house, hiring a team that specializes in moving and relocation services is one of the smartest moves you can make (pun definitely intended). No matter where you are moving to or what it is you're moving, the pros have the knowledge and experience to get the job done in an expert manner. As part of your planning process, shop around for a team that fits your needs and your budget, and don't be shy about asking friends, family and colleagues for recommendations.

When we downsized from a larger home into a smaller one with limited storage space, renting a storage unit was a lifesaver. It's a super-affordable storage option, with several different size units to choose from and a month to month payment arrangement. If you think you'll need self storage, be sure to look for a safe and secure facility with 24/7 access, CCTV and adequate lighting.

Moving IS a workout! According to caloriesperhour.com, a 140-pound person burns per hour:
Clearly, you're going to need a good night's sleep the night before your move, and a fresh pot of coffee first thing in the morning (please tell me you haven't packed that away yet...). Additionally, keep protein snacks like beef jerky, trail mix and protein bars, and plenty of water and / or drinks rich in electrolytes, on hand for everyone. Finally, make sure everyone knows that while time is of the essence, they should move at a pace that feels comfortable for them. |
