First rule of thumb when planning your move: Not everything you currently own needs to go with you. Leave that rank mattress in the nearest dumpster and throw those banged up pots and pans in the recycling bin. This is a new place, a new start, and time for new beginnings!
Here are a few new home essentials you may want to consider when planning your move.
1. Kitchenware: Dishes, Cookware, Bakeware, Mugs & Glasses, Utensils & Cutlery
What better excuse to trash your scorched pots and pans, chipped dishes and mismatched utensils than the fact that you're moving into a brand new home? Treat your new kitchen to an upgrade with new cooking and dining necessities. Here’s a few of my faves:
Are you seriously going to decorate your new home exactly as your old? Probably not. Take into consideration the places in your new digs where you plan on displaying artwork; the kind of artwork you want to display, plus the what and how. Larger spaces are perfect for creating gallery walls. Smaller spots for individual pieces. Shelves, tabletops, and fireplace mantles are ideal for creating stylish vignettes.
3. Bedroom Necessities: New Mattresses, Sheets and Pillows
During my last move, I left behind all of the mattresses we owned. They were dirty and dingy and mine in particular was as old as Methuselah. I was not about to bring these funky bad boys into a new space, so it was one of the more heftier expenses I was willing to budget into my new home.
Shopping for a new mattress can be as exasperating as shopping for a new car. But Casper.com has changed the mattress shopping game dramatically. There’s zero need to visit traditional mattress stores--you order right online! Once your mattress arrives (via free shipping), Casper lets you try out your new mattress out at home for 100 days.
If you do want to check it out in person, Casper can be found in some brick and mortar stores (like Target) and they will still adhere to Casper’s 100 day trial period. Nice!
All of Casper’s sleep products are developed in-house by the company’s award-winning R&D team, including its pillow-in-a-pillow, and inventive Lounger and Layer (designed exclusively for Target).
Check out Casper.com for more info, then head over to amazon.com to read some of their amazing reviews COUGH4.5starsCOUGH.

5. Window Treatments: Shades, Blinds, Curtains, Drapes, Valances, Rods & Hardware
Chances are you’re going to have to measure your new windows prior to purchasing any curtains or hardware, so my suggestion is to remember these items when it comes to your new home’s budget. Shades, blinds, curtains, drapes, valances, rods and hardware need to make the list. Check out this handy measuring guide from blinds.com.
6. Utility: Smoke & C02 Detectors; Extension Cords, Surge Protectors, Light Bulbs (in varying wattages), batteries and nightlight
