Choose Accessories Which Mean Something To You |
Maximize Your Entertainment |
Accessories are really where you make a living room your own. But too many people stick with cookie-cutter ideas from popular magazines rather than using something that really speaks to them personally. An accessory could be anything, from a painting you love to an ornament sitting on the window sill. But it should be something that is unique to you and your family - otherwise, it’ll lack meaning.
That’s not to say that you can’t buy something new - of course you can. But whatever you do purchase should have some additional meaning beyond “oh, it goes with the color scheme.” For example, consider a vintage frame for a baby portrait, or a pretty flower pot created by 3rd world artisans for your favorite plant. |
Okay, so you’ve got a television or two with plenty of cable TV channels. What do you need to take your entertainment to the next level, while also keeping things stylish?
It turns out that TVs, along with many other tech items, are slowly starting to focus more on aesthetics. Whereas once you had to make do with a big plastic box, now there are many more choices of TV, just like there are in the mobile phone market which emphasizes looks. LG, for instance, has created a TV that is just a few millimeters thick, literally the thickness of wallpaper. You can hang it from the wall like a piece of artwork, as well as use it for entertainment or as a digital art frame, showcasing all your favorite paintings. |
Now here's a twist: Millwork. Millwork is often overlooked as a unique addition to a living room, but when you think of some of the more stylish living rooms that you’ve seen, it’s likely that unique millwork played a role. You millwork just about anywhere in the room: on doors, between the walls and the ceiling (called crown molding), on walls at chair rail height (called chair rail molding), or even around a mirror or--our personal fave--to frame out a wall mounted flat screen tv. Milling allows you to add details where there were none before, upgrading the feel of your living room. You can get pieces of trim custom cut to measure at any home improvement store to mimic the look of pricier millwork.

Is your living room floor looking a bit rough, following years of use, and wear and tear? One way to really uplift the space is to replace the flooring with something unique and chic. Natural flooring, such as cork or bamboo, bring an element of sustainability and eco-friendliness to your home, and floor tile, such as limestone or slate, give a rustic vibe. If replacing your flooring is out of the question, then consider adding an affordable area rug, which looks stylish and sophisticated when anchored under your living room seating and tables. If you want to try your hand at a flooring DIY, why not stencil your existing floor?
