Are your surroundings looking a little worse for wear? Perhaps the walls are dirty and stained, or the wallpaper has started to peel away. Maybe your furniture is worn--throwbacks from previous homes and apartments--and it just doesn't make sense in your current home. If you're overwhelmed with the thought of refreshing your room, don't be. We're here to tell you that you can totally transform a tired room in just a weekend, and it doesn't have to be as expensive as you think. Here's how.
How To Transform A Tired Room In Just One Weekend
Clear The Room Entirely
Start your room refresh project by emptying the space completely. Use this as an excuse to declutter, throwing away or donating anything you no longer want, need or use. Remove as much of the furniture as you can, and give the room a thorough sweep, dust and vacuum (remember to hit all the baseboards and trim as well). If your carpet is looking a little worse for wear, rent a carpet cleaner (available at most supermarkets) and spend an hour or so giving it a good deep cleaning. You want to take this space to it's bare bones, making it as clean as possible in the process.
Give It A Coat Of Paint
Once your room is cleaned out, it's time to give it a fresh coat of paint. When choosing a paint color, make sure you keep in mind the purpose of the room and the amount of light it receives. A bedroom, for example, would benefit from calming hues like soft blues or grays (see image above). Real Simple put together these six steps for painting a room and we are totally on board with their tips. Of course another option, if your budget allows, is to hire a painting contractor. Not only is this convenient, but you can save yourself time and labor, allowing you to focus on other parts of the room's redesign.

Clean, Upcycle Or Repurpose Anything You Plan On Keeping
You certainly don’t need to purchase brand new furniture for your room re-do, but you should rethink anything that's seen better days. For items you will be keeping, make sure to give them a thorough dusting and cleaning. Could older items you love (but are dated) be given a new lease on life, perhaps with a fresh coat of chalk paint? Now is a great time to put your DIY skills to the test by upcycling and repurposing. If you're freshening up a bedroom, we do think you should consider purchasing new curtains, duvet and sheets, perhaps to complement your new paint color.

Purchasing a few new accessories is a smart way to refresh a tired room, and they don't have to be pricey pieces, either. For example, I love buying baskets from Goodwill for storage, as well as inexpensive artwork from The Dollar Tree. If you're refreshing your bedroom and have hardwood or tile floors, use an area rug to anchor the bed or add a throw rug beside it. Top off your room makeover with a few new accessories and perhaps an essential oil diffuser to scent the room and your tired space is as good as new!
These are just a few ways for you to transform an otherwise unused (or underused) room in your house. Do you have any other ideas you'd like to add? Let us know in the comments below!
