When you first moved into your home, you may have loved, or at least tolerated, your kitchen. Maybe your family grew over time, but your budget didn't, and now you're stuck with a kitchen that's lacking storage, is poorly organized and is tight on space--it can be so frustrating! With a poorly designed kitchen, you may find that the process of cooking for your family is much more taxing when you’re trying to cook in a space that you don’t enjoy. There are ways you can make your kitchen better, however. Try incorporating the tips that we’ve outlined below, and hopefully you’ll find yourself falling in love with your kitchen again.
How To Love Your Kitchen Again
Add Space
If your kitchen is lacking space, then how in the heck are you supposed to add it? If implementing an open concept kitchen by tearing out walls and creating space for enclosed cabinets and shelves is not possible, then use the walls to your advantage instead! Try adding:
The goal is to make the most of your wall space without making your kitchen more crowded or cramped than it might already be, so consider what's needed most in the room.
- A vertical pot rack
- A pegboard
- Open shelving
- A knife magnet
- A grid system
- A spice rack with space for potted herbs

Freshen Up The Space
Like with any room, we’re not going to enjoy our kitchen as much as could if it feels like it’s a little worse for wear. It’s much better to spend time in a kitchen that feels well put together, modern, looked after, and so on. If it has been some time since you last gave your kitchen a facelift, consider making some cosmetic changes. Updated lighting, refinished cabinets, and a fresh, bright coat of paint can make your kitchen feel brand new. Adding new linens such as curtains and a throw rug will help tie your new space together.
Upgrade Tired Appliances
Small appliances such as coffee makers, blenders and toasters aren't just functional, their about their form, too. Lately Smeg appliances are all the rage and for good reason: their unique retro appearance lends an air of old timey charm. If Smeg is out of your budget (it is for me!), look for more reasonable brands that not only work well but look good while doing it.
Create A Social Space
There has been a growing trend in recent years. People are turning to their kitchens for more than just cooking; they’re social spaces, too. If renovating your kitchen isn't in the cards right now, you can DIY a social space in your existing space. Consider swapping out your kitchen table and chairs for a banquette, which will help define the eating space and give your kitchen a cozy vibe. You can also create a small bar area with shelves or a bar cart, a place carved out for gathering and socializing.
By implementing a few of these ideas, your kitchen will become the heart of your home in no time.
