Start With PlantingsOne of the best ways to ensure your landscape looks great is to start with plantings. Decide what plants, shrubs and flowers you'd like to see in your garden beds. If you don't have actual garden beds but would like create some, you can use a free online landscaping program to sketch them out.
Choose plantings that are easy to maintain and are within your budget. We love the look of impatiens for lining walkways, flowering shrubs like rhododendron and forsythia and easy to grow tulips, daffodils and day lilies for beginning gardeners. If you decide to go for a big ticket landscape, hiring the right landscaping company is paramount. Not only will they bring their knowledge and expertise, but they will ensure that you are using the right materials, too. For example, lining garden beds with river rocks is a unique twist on typical ground cover, like mulch or wood chips. |
Introduce A Focal PointTo make a garden truly unique is to add one or two focal points within it. The focal points themselves can be anything you like: a water feature, a birdbath, gazing balls or buddha statues, for example.
My boyfriend loves to create quirky metal sculptures out of everyday objects, and his landscape is peppered with this unique objet d'art, from a dragon made out of a showerhead to a speakerbox robot. It may not be your cup of tea, but you see where we're going with this: don't be afraid to add touches of your own unique personality with focal points throughout your yard. |
Decorate With Repurposed Items...Speaking of focal points, why not upcycle some of the everyday household items into garden features? For example, you can create a unique planter out of an old tire, above. A sturdy ladder holds various sizes of planters and flowerpots. Tables can be made out of cable spools. The list goes on and on, and you're only limited by your imagination. For more inspo, check out this amazing list of repurposed salvaged items for the garden.

Make It ComfortableTo make your garden really appealing is to create a space that you'll actually want to spend time in. If you don't have a deck, patio or other designated entertaining areas in your garden, be sure to add a few tables and chairs (and perhaps a hammock, for relaxing) to your yard. A fire pit is especially enjoyable on cool evenings, surrounded by wrought iron chairs for seating and side tables for drinks.
