Don't Let These Three Household Chores Slip Your Mind!

Your home should be the place where you feel more comfortable than anywhere else. It should be the place where, no matter what is happening out there in the big scary world, your home is your safe space. Of course, it's pretty obvious that we don't live in a perfect world. No matter what, you're always going to find yourself coming up against unexpected problems, even in your home. But don't worry, that doesn't mean that there aren't things that you can do to protect yourself and your home. The most important thing is to make sure that you're keeping your home as well maintained as possible. With that in mind, here are a few nuggets of wisdom when it comes to home maintenance that you simply can't afford to forget about.

I've mentioned the importance of cleaning your gutters a few times here on the blog, and for good reason: there are few things more frustrating (and easily avoidable) than clogged up and blocked gutters. This is also one of the most common problems that you're going to face with your home's exterior if you do not have gutter guards. Depending on where you live, you're almost always going to have at least a good six months where the weather is less than ideal. A combination of rain, snow and falling leaves will end up filling your gutters with all kinds of debris. If this happens, you could easily end up with flooding from your drains which you really won't want to deal with. If you do need to clear the gutters, be sure to have a sturdy pair of gloves and a trowel handy to scoop out as much debris as possible, and then rinse the rest away with a hose. If the debris is too compact, then something like drain jetting can be incredibly useful. It's not a fun job, but it's far better than the alternative.

Contrary to what you might believe, plumbing isn't that complicated a task. Of course, there are some jobs that are best left to the professionals, such as burst pipes, retrofitting and other large HVAC jobs. However, if you're somewhat handy and not easily skerred, there are simple plumbing tasks that you can handle on your own:

Clogged tub and sink drains
Splash leaks around a shower door
Toilet leaks from the water tank or the water supply
Leaks at plumbing joints

Leaky faucets

Mind Your Air Conditioning

Air-conditioning is one of those things that you're never really going to know how much you'll miss it until it's gone. We all take the ability to keep our homes cool during the summer for granted which means that far too many people neglect to maintain their air-conditioning systems at all. Luckily, if something does go wrong, then there are always HVAC companies who can help fix and maintain your unit. Of course, being proactive with maintenance is key. Window AC units are the easiest to maintain, since it involves just cleaning (or replacing) the filter, cleaning the coils with a slightly damp rag and vacuum, and a visual inspection for insect and bird nests. Central AC isn't too difficult to maintain either, but may require more tools and knowledge than a layperson has.

Sure, dealing with these things isn’t exactly the most exciting household activity in the world, but it’s definitely better than having to deal with the fallout that can result from ignoring them!
