We all know just how important it is to get a good night's sleep. After all, exhaustion can cause serious health problems, and even being just a bit overtired can make your day far more difficult than it needs to be. A lack of sleep can make it hard to concentrate, make simple tasks more difficult and being tired can even have an impact on your mood. If you find yourself unable to get a decent night's sleep, then it's time to do something about it. Here are a few of the more common reasons why you might be having trouble sleeping, and what you can do about it.
What's Stopping You From Getting A Good Night's Sleep?Could It Be...An Uncomfortable Mattress? Imma be honest with you: My mattress is almost 10 years old. It has a divot where I typically sleep, and a few springs making their way through whatever's left of the padding. But I love my mattress, and I don't find the quality of my sleep to be poor at all. But not everyone is as lucky with their janky mattress as I am. How long have you had your mattress? On average, you're supposed to upgrade your mattress every seven years, give or take. If you find that your sleep is suffering on account of your mattress, then it might be time to invest in a new one.
Could It Be...Sleep Apnea? According to sleepapnea.org, it is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, with 80% of the moderate to severe cases going undiagnosed. I can attest to this, because I was one of those suffering. I would wake up with crippling migraine headaches at least 3-4 times per week. After many months of misery, I finally consulted with my doctor, who suggested I get a sleep study. The results? Along with my annoyingly heavy snoring, I would stop breathing multiple times per minute! No wonder I had headaches, I was literally cutting off the flow of oxygen to my brain (this actually explains a lot..hur hur). In any event, I was prescribed a CPAP machine, which helped to eliminate the headaches and I was able to get a better night's sleep. Could It Be...Noise?
Your neighborhood can often be one of the best things about where you live. Of course, that's not always the case. Sometimes inconsiderate neighbors seem dedicated to making your life as difficult as possible, especially after hours. Nothing is more frustrating than having to contend with loud music, stupid arguments, racing cars or incessant dog barking while trying to fall sleep. But enough about my 'hood. If you're friendly with your neighbors and they are indeed the source of the noise, a polite conversation with them may be in order. If the noise is more transient, you may have to consider other options, such as earplugs or a white noise machine.
