Caring for the exterior of your home is just as important as caring for your home’s interior, and as a homeowner that means there are a number of outdoor maintenance items you’ll need to keep up with. In this post, we’ll cover four of them.
Four Outdoor Maintenance Items You'll Need To Tend To
Your Swimming PoolIf you’re lucky enough to own a swimming pool, then you know that even though it’s wonderful to have, it requires a lot of upkeep. One of the main parts of the pool that you need to maintain is its water pump. Using a company like Slater Pumps can be helpful should your pump need repairing or replacing. To keep on top of your pool’s maintenance, skim the surface of your pool to get rid of bugs, leaves or debris, and clean the filter regularly. Make sure that the pH levels are kept between 7.2 and 7.8, the lower the pH the less chlorine your pool will need and, conversely, the higher the number the more chlorine you’ll need. Always maintain the water levels as well, making sure that the water is at or slightly above your pool skimmer. If it dips below, the pump can run dry and burn out, and if the water level is too high, the skimmer door will not work properly.

Maintain FencingFencing that surrounds your property is there to define property lines as well as protect your home from unwanted entry. Over time, your fence can become worn, weak and unattractive, and will no doubt require maintenance. This is especially true for wood fencing, which is susceptible to wood rot and weather damage. If you have a wood fence, use a waterproof wood glue to fill in any smallish cracks or splits. Tighten any loose boards with stainless steel screws and use a fence cleaner and power washer to eliminate any dirt, mold and mildew. If you decide to paint or stain your fence, make give your fence at least 24 hours to dry after it's been power washed. Finally, make sure that the entire fence is sealed with a polyurethane sealant to protect it from sun damage.

Tend To Your PlantsIf you have a garden on your property, then you know regular maintenance is vital to keeping the plants thriving and looking beautiful. Before you plant in the spring (or even in fall), make sure you turn over fresh soil and add composting and a good plant food, such as Miracle Grow. What you plant is up to you and the zone you live in (we just love a garden that attracts wildlife). Of course, no matter what you choose to plant, be sure to weed your garden beds, keep them free of debris and water them on the reg.

Care For Your Outdoor FurnitureCaring for your outdoor furniture is just as important as caring for the decks and patios they reside on. During the off season, make sure you keep cushions and pillows stored away from the elements. Ours are kept in oversized black garbage bags and stored in the basement; however, you can purchase cushion and pillow storage bags made specifically for storing them. Our patio furniture is kept on the deck, covered with tarps and zip tied to the deck railings, but only because we don’t have the room to store it all inside. If you happen to have room in the basement or garage, we strongly suggest you store it inside.
