If there’s one thing that people love to complain about, it’s the weather. We’re either too hot or too cold and sometimes it feels like we can never get it right. The truth is, the human body is just not that great at adapting to seasonal changes in temperature, so we rely heavily upon our environment to help us remain comfortable. In the winter, we can wrap up warm with additional layers, but in the summer things get a little bit more tricky, after all, there’s only so much that we can take off. So if you’re getting a bit hot and sweaty, here are five things that you can do to keep your home cool even in the middle of summer.
Five Ways To Keep Your Home Cool Even In The Middle Of Summer
1. Install Shutters
When the sun shines through our windows our home heats up like a greenhouse. Plantation shutters can help provide insulation from the sun by partially blocking the rays, allowing light in but not so much as to begin dramatically raising the temperature inside your home. On super hot days or on the sides of your home that receive the most sunlight, you may even want to close the shutters altogether to deflect the warmth of the sun’s rays.
2. Invest In Air Conditioning
This one is obvious, but if you haven’t got it already and you suffer in the summer months, then it’s time to consider installing air conditioning. Aircon may be an investment, but it’s one that will make you a lot more comfortable as well as increasing the resale value of your home. If you’re trying to keep costs down, then install an aircon unit in the room you use the most or think about purchasing a mobile unit.
3. Cook Al Fresco
As soon as you light up the stove or turn your oven on inside your kitchen you’ll notice the temperature starts to rise. Cooking inside on a hot day isn’t fun for anyone, so why bother. Instead, why not make the most of the warmer weather by dining outside as much as possible using a BBQ. Alternatively, stick to cool, no-cook meals such as salads that can be prepared without needing to turn on the stove.
4. Keep Windows Closed
When it’s hot inside, many people’s first reaction is to open their window, but if the air temperature outside is warmer than it is inside, then you’re actually heating up your home. Keep windows shut where you can and pull down blinds, shutters, and curtains to keep the inside of your house in the shade. The exterior of your home will absorb most of the heat leaving the air temperature inside your house cool and refreshing.
5. Use Ceiling Fans Correctly
If you can’t afford AC, then ceiling fans are a cost-effective alternative. Ceiling fans typically have two settings that change the direction of the fan blades. In summer, set your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise, blowing the air down and onto you and the room below. This passage of air will help you to feel cooler.
