Have you heard of the term hygge? This term comes from the Danish who are reportedly the happiest people on this earth (take that, Disneyphiles!). But for reals--in simple terms, hygge is the art of cozy living. It is ensuring that you live with the intention of feeling happy and fulfilled, and while feeling happy and fulfilled comes from within, your home's environment can also help to instill this feeling as well.
Creating A Hygge Home In Winter
With that in mind, let's create a warm, cozy home using our five senses--touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing--to embrace the hygge spirit and enjoy the winter months a little longer.
Touch: Soft cushions, plush blankets, velvet curtains, natural fibers
As a general rule, winter decor becomes a lot cozier just cuz. For example, we use heavier blankets to keep warm and heavier curtains and drapes to keep out drafts. You can create a hygge home environment by kicking your winter decor up a notch with faux fur throw pillows, velvety soft blankets and adding an area or throw rug in a natural fiber, like wool.
Taste: Hearty beef stew, sourdough bread, freshly baked cookies, hot chocolate
Delicious meals spent with friends and family are one of the many elements that make up hygge. Consider hosting an intimate dinner for your besties and serve them a simple yet hearty meal, like beef stew with fresh sourdough bread. For dessert, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and some hot chocolate by the fire (or faux fire!) while playing a board or card game is the perfect way to spend a hygge-like evening with friends.
Smell: Pine, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, cinnamon
There's nothing like filling your home with the scents of winter to help create a cozy environment during the colder months. Scents like pine, vanilla, sandalwood and cinnamon complement a hygge home perfectly. Consider using wax melts, candles (which add the perfect hygge touch) and diffusers throughout your home, taking care to extinguish or turn them off at the end of the day, or when you leave the house.

Sight: Neutral colors, minimalist decor, natural elements
Hygge interiors are mostly made up of neutral colors and minimalist decor, with a focus on natural elements like wood, stone and flora and fauna. These decor trends almost never go out of style, and can be incorporated year round--not just in winter. Add a few hearty plants to your decor, like a snake or spider plant (both of which thrive in winter) as well as wooden trays or trivets to hold decor pieces (like candles) and sentimental items (like photographs).
Hearing: Chill background music, LoFi, ambient, smooth jazz
Music is an integral part of our lives, and you can ensure a happy, cozy home by adding some chill background music to yours. Some smooth jazz or other Lo-Fi, ambient music is the perfect backdrop to a hygge home. If that's not your thing, you can still curate a playlist of songs and artists that have the same sort of vibe.
