We all want our guests to feel welcome in our home, which is why we do our best to bring out the softest sheets and fluffiest towels when we know we're having house guests. However, we don't often focus that much on the interior design of our guest rooms, seeing as though they are rarely used and can, in many cases, become a catch-all place for extra storage and other "out of sight" household items.
In this sense, our guest rooms can leave a lot to be desired. But if you're thinking of making over your guest room, we have five tips to help you refresh and renew the space that will wow any guest!
In this sense, our guest rooms can leave a lot to be desired. But if you're thinking of making over your guest room, we have five tips to help you refresh and renew the space that will wow any guest!
5 Ways To Upgrade Your Guest Room
1. Upgrade The Facilities
The first step is to consider upgrading your facilities. For instance, many people will end up putting an old, unwanted bed in the guest room with little consideration for the comfort of it. Spend a night sleeping on the bed, and make sure it’s comfortable. Similarly, when it comes to the guest bathroom you might want to consider investing in some modern glass shower doors, or make minor changes like upgrading the faucet and fixtures. An updated en suite is an often overlooked area that can contribute a lot to the experience of a guest bedroom.
2. Freshen The Air
Since the guest bedroom doesn’t tend to get much use, it can wind up smelling a little musty and old. A great option for keeping the room fresh are reed difussers, which come in a myriad of scents, styles and colors. You can also use plug ins, which come in lots of different scents and styles, as well as essential oil diffusers, which allow your guests to turn them off and on, as well as choose their favorite scents of essential oil. Having scented candles and a candle lighter on hand not only freshens the air but also adds ambience to the room.
3. Iron The Sheets
If you really want to go the extra mile, then ironing the sheets will make for a much more luxurious bedtime experience. The feel of getting into a bed with crisp, ironed sheets is a world apart from sheets that have spent a few months in the linen closet in anticipation of guests. This little touch will make your guest room feel a lot more luxurious and comfortable.
4. Keep Toiletries On Hand
If you’ve ever been to a fancy design hotel and felt let down by the poor standard of toiletries they offer, you're not alone. "It's a big deal if your bath amenity is bad," says Jeff David, managing director of the Knickerbocker, a historic Times Square building that re-opened as a hotel in February 2015. "It's almost like buying a Mercedes and the stereo is bad."
While your aim is not to get a five star rating from your guests, supplying decent toiletries can be a really good way to go the extra mile and make them feel like they are being treated like royalty when they stay over at your house.

5. Make It Personal
Many hotels today look for ways to tend to the unique needs and requirements of their guests, for instance, by providing them with their favorite newspaper. Little thoughts such as having their favorite newspaper or magazine ready for them when they arrive will go a long way in making them feel very special and welcomed guests. Also, surprise your guests with a treat in their room, such as candy or flowers.
As you can see, it doesn't take much to make your guest room feel like a five star hotel, and to make your guests feel warm and welcomed into your home. We love this infographic from bedbathandbeyond.com that puts together everything you'll need for your guests into one handy snapshot:
