2017 saw lots of trends; not just in beauty and fashion, but food and home, too (shiplap, anyone?). Check out our picks for the top trends of 2017.
2017 Lifestyle Trends: The Year In ReviewBeautyUnicorn Hair & Mermaid Makeup
NGL, I love the unicorn / mermaid craze, and tbh, I'm still wondering what the difference is. If you know, tell me in the comments. I absolutely adore that gorgeous hair in the photo above: in fact, I have been known to rock a little pink in my hair now and then, and I'm probably twice her age. I'm a firm believer in timeless beauty, and that includes having fun with hair color.
I also own (and love) those mermaid makeup brushes. Want a set for yourself? You can use the lip brush to apply Too Faced's La Creme Mystical Effects Lipstick Mermaid Tears lipstick. Baking Your Makeup
2017 also made the trend of baking your makeup a little more popular, which I have never tried to do. Why? Because I have roughly 6.008 minutes to put on my makeup in the a.m. and unless there's a trend called microwaving your makeup, I don't think I have enough time for the baking technique to work it's magic.
Charcoal Beauty Products
Charcoal beauty products had their moment as well, especially face masks and toothpaste and teeth whiteners. According to livestrong.com, activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, helping you to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. Activated charcoal toothpaste and tooth powders help whiten teeth and remove stains, too.
FashionFuzzy Slides
While the Adidas Adilette and Adissage slides have been a staple in many closets for many years, the fuzzy slide was uber popular last year. Even I indulged in a pair like these!
Fishnets-Under-Destroyed-Jeans
While it cannot be confirmed, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the fishnets-under-destroyed-jeans trend was started by a Kardashian. I gotta admit, it's a cute look, very trendy indeed.
Pom Poms
Pom pom clothing made a splash over the summer, with the little colorful, fuzzy balls turning up on everything from bathing suits and cover ups, sandals, hats and more. And I lurvvv how the pom pom trend has transitioned into winter. Check out these adorable pieces!
Chokers
Chokers are the epitome of the phrase "everything old is new again". This is one trend that makes the rounds every ten-ish years or so, and for good reason--chokers are cute and come in a ridic variety of styles, colors and materials. Like pom poms, I hope they stick around for awhile.
Food And DrinkMatcha
Did you know? One serving of matcha tea is the nutritional equivalent of ten--count 'em, ten--cups of green tea! Full on antioxidants, rich in fiber and vitamin C, zinc and magnesium, matcha helps to boost your metabolism, detoxify your body and enhances your mood. It's truly a superfood that's time is due!
Meal Delivery Kits
According to Forbes, "meal delivery kits are reinventing the dinner ritual a very good way. Working couples, singles, and busy families who care about eating fresh, home-cooked meals are flocking to the concept of a freshly prepped meal-in-a-box and the market is lighting up with a flurry of new offerings".
What's the best meal delivery kit for you? Buddha Bowls
2017 lost it's collective mind over food in a bowl. LMAO. Honestly, I don't even know how else to describe this trend. It's quite literally a deconstructed salad, rice or noodle dish-in-a-bowl, and are also referred to as hippie bowls or glory bowls. A grain/starch, a veggie and a protein generally make up a Buddha bowl. Check out these Buddha bowl recipes from Buzzfeed.
Protein
Consuming a diet high in protein has many benefits, including helping to lose and maintain weight, boost your energy level and aid in concentration. It's no surprise that food manufacturers jumped on the protein bandwagon and started to add these macromolecules to its prepackaged foods. Let Dr. Axe tell you why eating a high-protein diet (full of real food) is a good idea.
Home And GardenBoho / Tribal
I do love this look. A lot. Full of watercolor tones and natural elements, It can be clean and minimal, or it can be messy and cluttered, and either look works. I also think it's pretty timeless--after all, it's been around since the 1960s. If you dig the look too, check out my post on how to create your own boho bedroom.
Minimalism
Another decor trend having it's moment is minimalism. Minimalist decor consists of furniture pieces that do double (and sometimes triple) duty. Clutter is eliminated and organization is key. Neutral tones dominate the color palette. Want to see how you can incorporate minimalism into your decor? Check out mydomaine.com--they put together a great article on how to do the minimalist look.
Subway Tile
Subway tile has been around since the invention of the subway (hurr, hurr), and it's made a huge (back)splash in home decor last year. It's versatile, elegant and clean--the perfect backdrop for just about any style. Here's Architectural Digest to show you 23 ways to decorate with subway tile.
Shiplap
* Sigh *. If I never hear this word again, it will be too soon. It's not the look, it's the word. Shiplap. Shiplap. Shiplap.
According to Wikipedia, "Shiplap is a type of wooden board used commonly as exterior siding in the construction of residences, barns, sheds, and outbuildings. It is either rough-sawn 1" or milled 3/4" pine or similarly inexpensive wood between 3" and 10" wide with a 3/8" - 1/2" rabbet on opposite sides of each edge". We have Joanna Gaines to thank for the shiplap trend, which works perfectly in farmhouse, country and casual home decor. Don't want to install actual shiplap in your home? Here's some great faux shiplap options. Honorable Trendy Mentions
