A Conversation With Holly Poney of Luna Designs, LLC
I can definitely appreciate that! How about your work space, how would you describe that?
My creative space continues to morph. As anyone who has ever worked with beads or beading materials, it gets really tricky trying to see what you have on hand when you are trying to create a specific look. I have tried a variety of organizational ideas and it remains a work in progress. I am working presently close to a window so that I get the opportunity to look out frequently to nature. Nature plays a huge factor in the colors and materials that I chose.
What about when you suffer a creative block, what do you do to unblock?
I usually switch from one medium to another if I have a block, that is the joy of having a few crafty outlets to choose from. I may spend months preparing for a trunk show and then once it is over I will focus on a gallery installment to balance out. I will also take some time to work on my vision boards.
That’s really smart thinkin’. What sorts of things are inspiring you right now? Where do you look for inspiration?
I do quite a bit of research into style trends by season but I do not necessarily follow them, I may see a color scheme or trend that I will follow. I love color! In the beginning of my business development I would only work with semi-precious stones, now I use all types of material to create the look I am going for. I also look for inspiration in nature, fashion, travel and NYC.
One last question--what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
I had an artist tell me not to ever sell my vision short as an artist. Art is eclectic and constantly changing and to never give up in the face of rejection. I always had a fear of “juried” art shows for fear of the rejection and this advice helped me realize that it’s not always about perfection.
